It’s cool to be skeptical of promises of “flying cars,” but I don’t care. I’ve dreamt of owning some sort of personal flying vehicle for a long time, so I’m willing to be suckered in time and time again for as long as it takes to finally get one.
Haha, no, not really. The founder of DeLorean Aerospace, Paul DeLorean, is apparently the nephew of John DeLorean, the founder of the DeLorean Motor Company, though. Here’s what they’re actually working on:
Pretty cool design, I think. The wings will fold up, which will help with storage and should allow it to fit in a decent-sized garage.
The fans will blow downwards while taking off, then they’ll rotate back to propel the vehicle forward. The article doesn’t say, but I presume that there must be some way to also make some adjustments from side to side since there are only two fans arranged along the centerline of the aircraft. Otherwise, you have to just hope that everything is perfectly balanced!
DeLorean has a couple non-flying prototypes right now, and hope to have a full-sized flying prototype by the end of the year. Maybe this flying car will be the one that actually works and is practical? Who knows.
All I know is, I want one. If it works. And won’t kill me.
